I promised to compile a list of Simple exercises you can do in the office but before we dive in just a few facts so you understand what this is about.

The number of recorded death cases in the Nigerian business and working environment has increased rapidly in the last 5 - 8 years.

All industries have not been spared and these cases affect both young and old citizens of Nigeria.

Many of these cases have been found to arise from a mixture of a poor health awareness, an increased stress level experienced in recent times plus an unbalanced and unhealthy lifestyle.

Research has shown strong links between prolonged stress and many disorders, mentally and physically. The immune system is easily affected by stress

The 'risk factors' linked with cardiovascular disease include diet, smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and stress.

Life starts with the heart and stops with the heart.

The Goal of exercising is to move Blood and generate heat (warmth). In this era of Air conditioning ‘ I literally fell ill at my first day at a new a company. I interviewed with the organisation when the central AC was busy and I didn’t come prepared. I personally believe Air Conditioners slow down the flow of Blood, so sitting down from 9-5 cannot help 'my destiny' in any way.

Let’s move more, walk, use the stairs and not the elevator, take your exercise ball to your work space and sit on it. Your chair might be the root cause of your bad posture and back pain. Change it up a bit, your life is your responsibility nobody will live it for you

Below are the 10 exercises any ‘BUSY’ executive can do every day.

    1. Stand More – That simple, get up and stand in your meetings, at lunch etc

    2. Speed walk – from the car park to the office, sweat a little (forget makeup, you can reapply it, only people who are healthy feel good enough to apply makeup)

    3. Stretch often – Uncurl, raise your hands and stretch well (you can do this together with your colleague or when you are alone to avoid embarrassing anyone)

    4. Use the stairs – I personally don’t like lifts, I always feel that PHCN will do their thing and just maybe the generator might not come on immediately

    5. Strength push – Thank God for walls they have good use as a tool to exercise, stand parallel and push against the wall with strength and count to 60

    6. Swing Arm – Be carefree and give your arms a good swinging,

    7. Squeeze tummy – Women you know kegels right! this is kegels for the tummy, it helps for the sucked in tummy look.

    8. Squats – bring your exercise ball to work and use as your seat for the day, the posture is akin to doing squats, you will appreciate the results

    9. Sweat more – run up the stairs, brisk walk to the office, break a sweat more often

    10. Smile more – smiling is so much medicine to the body, you are exercising facial muscles and taking years off your face.

Your wellness is a total lifestyle and behavioural change. Caring employers can take part responsibility in ensuring employees take care of their health.

Well being evaluation of staff can be done quarterly and this reduces absenteeism, sick leave days and HMO expense for staff and increases productivity, improved staff morale etc

What is Wellbeing Evaluation? Doing basic body evaluation, checking the following:

Blood pressure, Body mass index (BMI), heart rate, fasting blood sugar, waist-hip ratio, cholesterol check and a whole lot.
